India summons Korean envoy over Hyundai tweet

Amidst the controversy over Hyundai Motors affiliate in Pakistan tweeting on the Kashmir issue, South Korean Foreign Minister Chung Eui-yong spoke to his Indian counterpart S Jaishankar.

South Korea’s Ambassador to India – Chang Jae-bok – had been summoned on Monday and had been made aware of India’s “strong displeasure” over “an unacceptable social media post on Kashmir”.

The South Korean government on Tuesday said it “regretted the offence caused to the people of India”.

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi tweeted that South Korean Foreign Minister Chung Eui-yong spoke today to his counterpart in Delhi, S Jaishankar, to convey his deep regret.

Earlier today Hyundai issued a lengthy statement clarifying that the company, which is one of the world’s biggest car makers, does not comment on political or religious issues of any country.
