Using Pegasus to spy unlawfully is tantamount to hijacking democracy, says Congress

On Saturday, Congress attacked the Centre over a New York Times report stating that the Indian government had purchased the Pegasus spy tool in 2017.

The report states that during Modi’s visit to Israel, the spy tool Pegasus was purchased to keep an eye on opposition parties. Congress leaders responded to the latest revelations in the New York Times that the ruling party used Pegasus spyware for illegal espionage of opposition leaders, journalists, Supreme Court judges and other civilians resulting in an “act of treason”

In a press conference, the Secretary-General of the Congress (communication) Randeep Surjewala and the leader of the opposition to Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge said it was now clear that the Modi government purchased the spyware and Mr Modi was directly involved in signing the deal.

Randeep Surjewala says that BJP has misled Parliament and the Supreme Court. It has used taxpayers’ money to spy and spoon on its own people. They have hijacked democracy for the 2019 Lok Sabha election. This is an act of treason

In Parliament, Minister of Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw said the reports on the use of Pegasus in India were “baseless” and “highly sensational”.
