The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) on Friday has proposed to reduce the minimum distance between meat shops and religious places in Delhi. Now, all the meat shops are to be located 100m away from all the religious places.
According to the earlier rules, meat shops were supposed to be located 150m away from religious spots, which has now come down to 100m. The standing committee has planned to revise its policy of licensing meat shops and directed the veterinary department to finalise the proposed changes.
These new rules will be applicable to the new shops only. Right now, there are currently 1600 meat shops under SDMC.
According to the Chairman of the standing committee, BK Oberoi, “the existing shops can continue operating” (Reported by TOI).
Apart from this, the corporation is also planning to reduce the minimum required area for two animal slaughter shops and a pork shop to 100 square feet, which is currently 120 square feet and 150 square feet. The corporation is also planning to reduce the minimum required height of the ceiling of a meat shop from 3 metres to 2.5 metres and add the provision of installing an air conditioner inside the shop.
