India has expressed its concerns to Ottawa over a bill before Canada’s Parliament that would prohibit the sale and exhibition of abhorrent symbols including the swastika, which has been linked to Nazism.
A private member’s bill introduced last week by National Democratic Party MP Peter Julian, which has the support of party leader Jagmeet Singh, has enraged the Indo-Canadian community over the “demonization” of a holy symbol.
“Confederate flags and Swastikas have no place in Canada.” “It’s time to outlaw hate symbols in Canada,” Jagmeet Singh said earlier this month, backing a petition.
Chandra Arya, a member of Trudeau’s Liberal Party of Canada, is expected to raise the issue in the House of Commons. According to his office, he is “very worried” about proposals to outlaw the Hindu holy emblem Swastika. He’s taking the initiative to prevent this from happening.”
