NATO to hold meeting over Ukraine today

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) will host an emergency meeting on Friday in response to Russia’s full-scale attack in Ukraine. After Russian President Vladimir Putin authorised the war on Ukraine last week, NATO members rushed to fortify their eastern flank, according to news agency AFP. The allies, on the other hand, remained firm that they would not get ‘military entangled’ in Ukraine, which is not yet a member of the alliance.

Despite international pressure, the US-led alliance has rejected the idea of implementing a no-fly zone over Ukraine, where Russian forces have launched repeated attacks against civilian targets. The alliance claimed that imposing a no-fly zone would risk escalating into a nuclear war with Russia.

The NATO meeting takes place just one day after Russia and Ukraine held their second round of ceasefire talks in Belarus on Thursday. Military and humanitarian challenges, as well as a prospective political settlement of the ongoing conflict, were discussed by both governments. Moscow and Kyiv agreed to set up humanitarian corridors to evacuate civilians, as well as a possible temporary ceasefire in the evacuation zones.
