Russia’s Daniil Medvedev dethrones Nadal to become World no 1

Medvedev has surpassed 20-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic of Serbia, who had previously held the top rank for a total of 361 weeks.

Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, is the first player outside of the ‘Big Four’ of Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Andy Murray to reach No. 1 in the world rankings in 18 years, three weeks, and six days – since Andy Roddick did it on February 1, 2004.

The last time a new world number one in men’s tennis was established was more than five years ago when Murray did so on November 7, 2016.

Medvedev is the third Russian to do so, following Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Marat Safin, who were number one for six and nine weeks, respectively.
