Possible increase in International terrorism emanating from Afghan territory: India at UN

India cautioned on Wednesday that the situation in Afghanistan might have consequences throughout Central Asia. Following the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, TS Tirumurti, drew the attention of the UN Security Council to the possibility of an increase in international terrorism and drug trafficking.

The Indian envoy was speaking at a United Nations Security Council meeting about “Cooperation between the United Nations and the Collective Security Treaty Organization.” The CSTO, which includes Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan, is commemorating its 20th anniversary.

The Security Council passed Resolution 2593 in August, stating that Afghan territory should not be used to threaten or attack other countries. With 13 votes in favour and two abstentions (Russia and China), the resolution was passed.
