During the inauguration of The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) World Sustainable Development Summit on Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi cited the need for adequate financing for protecting from climate change.
PM acknowledged the increasing energy demand can lead to climate crises in future. Therefore he called upon the developed countries to help the world financially to deal with climate crises. “Successful climate actions also need adequate financing. For this, developed countries need to fulfil their commitments on finance and technology transfer,” said PM.
Urging for global cooperation he said, “sustainability requires coordinated action for the global commons. Our efforts have recognised this inter-dependence.”
Climate change has been an agenda for global political leaders for decades. The need for having sustainable environmental development is the key focus. On this note, PM Modi also highlighted India’s vision on clean energy distribution for the world through its- “One Sun, One World, One Grid.”
PM stressed on achieving environmental sustainability through climate justice. While talking about the Solar energy mission he also said, “Energy requirements of the people of India are expected to nearly double in the next twenty years. Denying this energy would be denying life itself to millions.”
He claimed that India has always believed in ‘reduce, reuse, recycle, recover, re-design and re-manufacture’, policy. “Our culture, rituals, daily practices and numerous harvest festivals demonstrate our strong bonds with nature,” he said.
This three-day summit will have global guests including Luis Abinader, President of the Dominican Republic, Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali, President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, Amina J Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General, United Nations, heads of various intergovernmental organizations and ministers from more than a dozen countries and delegates from over 120 countries.
The theme of this summit is “Towards a resilient planet: ensuring a sustainable and equitable future.”
