Kala Ramachandran: First woman Police Commissioner of Gurugram

On Tuesday, Gurugram got its first woman Police Commissioner- Kala Ramachandran. IPS officer (Indian Police Service) is a pass out of 1994 batch and she took charge of Gurugam while replacing KK Rao as the police commissioner.

While taking charge of Gurugram she expressed her vision for the city’s development. She said, “Gurgaon, being a city with a diverse milieu, from rural to corporate to industrial to urban residential, the focus will be on facilitation of ease of doing business and to make life easier for everyone. The focus of the police should be on improving the lives of common citizens.” (Indian Express Report)

Further emphasising the issue of safety and security especially of women, she said, “The security of citizens from street crimes such as hooliganism, snatchings, eve-teasing and drunken driving, and security of women and minors would remain a key priority. Women should be safe and that’s the sign of a mature society also that women can go out of the house without fear. We will also focus on economic offences and cybercrime.”

Earlier she was posted as the Principal Secretary to the government of Haryana, Transport Department, with additional charge of ADGP State Vigilance Bureau (H). She also headed the North Eastern Police Academy in Meghalaya from 2017 to 2020, and then returned to the cadre in August 2020.
