In response to continuous trucker demonstrations over several Covid-19-related restrictions, including vaccination requirements, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has declared a national emergency.
As the agitation approached its 18th day, Trudeau made the announcement, invoking the Emergency Act, which was adopted in 1988 and had never been utilised before in Canadian history.
The measure would enable the government to probe crowdfunding sites and payment processors that the Freedom Convoy 2022 used to fund their protest, as well as require financial institutions to freeze the accounts of persons or organisations involved in the agitation.
