Humera Baharmus fought hard in the opening round of the $15,000 ITF women’s tennis competition at the Joygaon Academy on Tuesday, defeating free-stroking left-hander Saumya Vig 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.
The 20-year-old Humera, who fired seven aces and struck the ball brilliantly, called the shots in the climax, dropping three points in total to win the last three games from a 3-3 tie in the decisive.
Saumya performed admirably but was unable to capitalise on her opportunities. While Humera converted six of the thirteen break points she forced, Saumya only converted four of the twelve breakpoints.
