In light of the third wave of COVID-19, the Supreme Court today declined to postpone the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering exam, 2022 (GATE 2022).
The Supreme Court stated that a last-minute adjustment would cause chaos and uncertainty among the 900,000 students scheduled to take the test on February 5th.
Candidates who were scheduled to take the exam submitted three applications asking for the exam to be postponed, citing the Covid-19 outbreak and restrictions placed across the country to stem the spread of diseases.
Justices Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud, Surya Kant, and Vikram Nath said it’s risky for courts to intervene in academic matters. “We can’t play with the careers of the students.” We must delegate these decisions to statutory bodies. The test will take place on February 5th. The majority of pupils would have prepared ahead of time. Any order of delay has the risk of causing confusion and uncertainty.
GATE is a test that is used to go into master’s programmes and to get into various government jobs. The GATE notice came out in August, and the admission cards came out last month.
