As the budget session starts, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Economic Survey on Monday in Parliament. According to this latest survey, the country has observed an exponential growth in the number of start-ups. Over 61,400 start-ups have been recognised in India as of January 10, 2022
From these 61,400 start-ups, Delhi registered 5,000 start-ups in 2021-2022, surpassing Bengaluru with 4,514 start-ups. However, with 11,000 recognised start-ups, Maharastra holds the highest number of start-ups in the country.
On the other hand, 44 start-ups turned into unicorns, thereby helping India emerge as the third highest country in terms of the number of unicorns with 83 unicorns, (a total valuation of $277.77 billion) after the US and China. Unicorn refers to a startup that reaches a valuation of $1 billion.
The majority of the country’s start-ups are in the IT/knowledge-based sector. In the last three years, the number of start-ups in the space sector has increased from 11 in 2019 to 47 in 2021.
