Fresh political row emerges over Pegasus spyware ahead of Parliament’s session

Congress calls purchase of Israeli software an “act of treason” ahead of the budget session in parliament

The pegasus snoop gate row controversy has reemerged after several months to haunt the Modi government after the New York Times reported that the Indian government purchased Pegasus software in July 2017 to carry out targeted surveillance on its citizens.

The investigative report further claims that high-level meetings took place between prime minister Modi and former Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu during this deal, further revelations go on claiming that a UN vote on Palestine in favour of Israel was a part of this deal.

Congress mp’s Rahul Gandhi and Shashi Tharoor lambasted the government over this media report calling the purchase of pegasus an “act of treason” and a “grave threat to our democracy”. CPI general secretary Sitaram Yechury called the incident unacceptable and demanded a further inquiry into these claims.

Neither the Home ministry nor the ministry of external affairs responded to these claims made by the New York Times.

Meanwhile, the NYT didn’t provide their sources for the claims they made.
